"Concept of the year", created by YummyColours, is a collection of work by 70+ creators/artists. It is an invitation to explore creatively, and an open-ended prompt for work created through intentional and personal interpretation.
“Terrain X,” was developed under the 2021 theme “FUEL ON WATER // IRIDESCENCE.” The work consists of a series of a landscape entirely covered in an iridescent, oil-like surface, where everything—land, atmosphere, and horizon—shimmers with the reflective sheen of fuel floating on water. The sun appears as a powerful and almost oppressive presence, intensifying the luminous surface and amplifying its artificial glow.
For this project, I sought to construct a world shaped simultaneously by the natural and the artificial. However, rather than presenting them as opposing forces, the landscapes suggest a quiet but undeniable takeover: the artificial has already permeated and coated the natural environment. The iridescence becomes both seductive and unsettling—beautiful in appearance, yet rooted in contamination. Terrain X reflects on our collective decision not to see this transformation, on how spectacle and surface can mask gradual environmental displacement.
